Accelerating Progress
Recently, we’ve seen groundbreaking developments from both DeKalb County and the City of Brookhaven—developments that promise to accelerate our journey towards a fully realized 12-plus-mile Greenway. This isn’t just good news; it’s a transformative step forward for our communities.
DeKalb County Makes Moves
Thanks to the relentless efforts of Congressman Hank Johnson and DeKalb Commissioner Robert Patrick, DeKalb County secured an $800,000 federal appropriation. This funding kick-starts the initial planning and engineering of the Greenway segments from Fisher Trail Park to Chamblee Tucker Road, near Mercer University. This section is crucial as it will connect communities all along the I-85 corridor, eventually creating a connection to the Atlanta Beltline and stretching up to Gwinnett County.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to both Congressman Johnson and Commissioner Patrick. Your commitment to our community’s future is evident, and it’s your hard work that has brought this vision closer to reality.
Brookhaven’s Bold Move
In a bold and strategic move, the City of Brookhaven has decided to forego federal funding for the Phase III segment of the Greenway, from Briarwood Road to Clairmont Road. This decision, unanimously supported by Mayor John Park and the City Council, means that Brookhaven will now fully fund this phase with local resources. By doing so, they aim to complete the work faster and more cost-effectively, sidestepping the usual delays and inflated costs associated with federal funding.
Mayor Park put it simply yet powerfully: “We’re going to do it faster and we’re going to save taxpayer dollars. It’s that simple.” This move not only accelerates the construction timeline by several years but also ensures that taxpayer money is utilized with maximum efficiency.
Why This Matters
The Peachtree Creek Greenway is more than just a path; it’s a vital infrastructure project that enhances safety, promotes healthy living, preserves our environment and connects communities. Situated parallel to Buford Highway, one of Georgia’s most dangerous roads, the Greenway offers a safe alternative for pedestrians and cyclists, linking them to employment centers, transit options, and green spaces.
These recent commitments from DeKalb County and Brookhaven reflect a shared vision of connectivity and community-first infrastructure. They also send a clear message to our regional partners: We are leading the way, and we expect you to keep pace.
As we continue to make strides toward a greener, more connected DeKalb County, your support remains invaluable. Stay tuned for more updates, and join us in celebrating each milestone as we bring the full vision of the Peachtree Creek Greenway to life.
